Questions from the employer that cannot be answered correctly

Imagine you are in an interview. You may encounter puzzle questions: “Why are the sewer manholes round?”, “How many balls will fit on the bus?”, Etc. Or with quite classic ones: “What are your strengths and weaknesses?”, “Why did you leave the last places of work? ” These questions can be prepared socially acceptable answers that the employer considers correct, although there is no definite answer to them.

But there are more complicated questions. Their common goal is to learn more about your personality, work style, values, possible prospects, and how your brain works. You cannot learn directly about such things. Nevertheless, one can also prepare for them in order to put oneself in the best light. However, it is worthwhile to study the company in advance in order to know about its values and preferences in staff. Work.ua prepared several such questions and recommendations for answers.
How flexible are you at work?

Prepare stories that demonstrate that you can adapt to different conditions and needs. Tell us about how you changed your work schedule depending on the circumstances, how you tailored your work to the needs of management or colleagues. Such skills confirm that even in difficult situations you can come to a compromise. People often cannot find a common language with each other, if this is easy to do with you, then this is a big plus.
Are you an ambitious person?

Few people actually know what he wants to achieve, and where he will be in 5 years. But can you roughly describe the career path that interests you? What positions would you like to work in, what responsibilities do you fulfill? Do you see it at least vaguely, or rely only on chance? Can you tell us in which direction you intend to move? What have you done for your career until this day? Can you move on with your current knowledge and skills? Try to answer these questions yourself. This will help to create a structured answer to the employer's question about your ambitions.

Simply put, you should formulate a vision of your own professional future and convey it to the interlocutor.
Are you outgoing? Get along well with people?

In many job descriptions you can find a mention of the sociability of the candidate. The same skill is often written in resumes. It has become a standard paragraph, the meaning of which many do not even think about, but simply insert into the text. However, the ability to communicate and get along with others is very important in work. And the employer will test this skill in an interview.

These questions are designed to test you in action. Will you give examples from the past about how to establish contacts with complex clients or colleagues? Will you actively participate in the dialogue with the interviewer or give short answers? Do you understand when it is time to stop in your story?

Preparing answers to popular questions is good. But you need to remember the behavior, your portrait, as a professional and personality. To do this, you need to work out many nuances, change some of your habits, etc. But this will give a result.

Create yourself anew: where to start, to change your life

Here are the things: I was at zero several times, returned to life several times, did it again and again. I started new careers. People who knew me then do not know me now. And so on.

Several times I started my career from scratch. Sometimes because my interests changed. Sometimes - because all the bridges were burned without a trace, and sometimes because I desperately needed money. And sometimes - because I hated everyone at my previous job or they hated me.

There are other ways to reinvent yourself, so be skeptical about my words. This is what worked in my case. I saw how this works for about a hundred other people. From the interview, from the letters that they wrote to me over the past 20 years. You can try it or not.
1. Change Never Ends

Every day you rediscover yourself. You are always on the move. But every day you decide where exactly you are moving: forward or backward.
2. Start from scratch

All your past labels are just vanity. Have you been a doctor? Ivy League graduate? Owned by millions? Did you have a family Nobody cares. You have lost everything. You are zero. Do not try to say that you are something big.
3. You need a mentor

Otherwise, you will sink. Someone should show you how to move and breathe. But don't worry about finding a mentor (see below).
4. Three types of mentors

Straight. Someone who is ahead of you, who will show you how he achieved this. What does “this” mean? Wait a moment. By the way, mentors are not like that hero Jackie Chan in the movie "Karate Boy." Most mentors will hate you.

Indirect. Books. Films. You can get 90% of the instructions from books and other materials. 200-500 books equate to a good mentor. When people ask me: “What good book is worth reading?” I don’t know what to answer. There are 200-500 good books to read. I would turn to inspirational books. Whatever you believe in, strengthen your beliefs with daily reading.

Anyone can be a mentor. If you are nobody and want to create yourself anew, everything that you look at can become a metaphor for your desires and goals. The tree that you see, with roots that are inaccessible to the eye, and the groundwater that feeds it, is a metaphor for programming if you connect individual points together. And everything that you look at will “connect the dots”.
5. Do not worry if nothing carries you away

You care about your health. Start with it. Do small steps. You do not need passion to succeed. Do your job with love and success will become a natural symptom.

6. The time it takes to recreate yourself: 5 years

Here is a description of these 5 years.

First year: you flounder and read everything and just start to do something.

Second year: you know with whom you need to talk and maintain working relationships. You do something every day. You finally understand what the map of your own Monopoly game looks like.

Third year: you are good enough to start making money. But for now, perhaps not enough to earn a living.

Fourth year: you provide yourself well.

Fifth year: you make a fortune.

Sometimes I fell into frustration in the first four years. I asked myself: “why hasn’t this happened yet?”, Hit with a fist on the wall and broke my arm. It's ok, just keep going. Or stop and select a new field for activity. It does not matter. Someday you will die - and then it will be really difficult to change.

7. If you do it too fast or too slow, then something is going wrong.

A good example is Google.
8. It's not about the money.

But money is a good measure. When people say, “This is not because of money,” they need to be sure that they have some other unit of measure. "How about just doing what you love?" There will be many days ahead when you will not like what you do. If you do this out of pure love, it will take much more than five years. Happiness is just a positive reaction of your brain. Some days you will be unhappy. Your brain is just a tool; it does not determine who you are.
9. When can I say “I practice X”, when does X become your new profession?

Today
10. When can I start practicing X?

Today. If you want to paint, buy canvas and paints today, start buying 500 books one at a time and paint. If you want to write, do the following three things:

- read

- write

- Take your favorite author and print his best story word for word. Ask yourself why he wrote every word. May he be your mentor today.

If you want to start a business, start to come up with an idea for a business. Recreating yourself begins today. Everyday.
11. When will I make money?

In a year, you will invest 5000-7000 hours in this business. This is good enough for you to get into the top 200-300 in the world for any specialty. Getting into the top 200 will almost always provide you with livelihoods. By the third year, you will understand how to make money. By the fourth you will be able to increase speed and provide for yourself. Some stop there.

12. By the fifth year, you will be in the top 30-50, so you can make a fortune

13. How to determine what is mine?

Any area in which you are able to read 500 books. Go to the bookstore and find her. If after three months you feel bored, go to the bookstore again. To get rid of illusions is normal, this is the meaning of defeat. Success is better than defeat, but the most important lessons give us defeat. Very important: do not rush. During your interesting life, you can change yourself many times. And fail many times. This is fun too. These attempts will turn your life into a story book, not a textbook. Some people want their life to be a textbook. Mine is a story book, good or bad. Therefore, changes occur every day.
14. The decisions you make today will be in your biography tomorrow.

Make interesting decisions and you will have an interesting biography.
15. The decisions you make today will be part of your biology.

16. What if I like something exotic? Biblical archeology or the wars of the XI century?

Repeat the above steps, and by the fifth year you will be able to get rich. We do not know how. There is no need to look for the end of the path when you take only the first steps.
17. What if my family wants me to become an accountant?

How many years of your life did you promise to give to your family? Ten? All life? Then wait for the next life. You choose.

Choose freedom, not family. Freedom, not prejudice. Freedom, not government. Freedom, not satisfaction of other people's requests. Then you will satisfy yours.
18. My mentor wants me to follow his path.

This is normal. Master his way. Then do it your own way. Sincerely.

Fortunately, no one puts a gun to your head. Then you would have to fulfill his requirements until he lowered the gun.
19. My husband (wife) is worried - who will take care of our children?

A person who changes himself always finds free time. Part of changing yourself is to find moments and redraw them the way you would like to use them.
20. What if my friends consider me crazy?

What kind of friends are these?
21. What if I want to be an astronaut?

This is not a change of self. This is a specific profession. If you like space, there are many professions. Richard Branson wanted to be an astronaut and created Virgin Galactic.
22. And if I like to drink and hang out with friends?

Read this post again in a year.
23. And if I am busy? Cheating on spouse or betray my partner?

Read this post again after two or three years, when you are aground, without work and everyone will turn their backs on you.
24. And if I don’t know anything?

Read paragraph 2 again.
25. And if I do not have a diploma or from it is no use?

Read paragraph 2 again.
26. And if I need to focus on paying a mortgage or other loan?

Read paragraph 19 again.
27. Why do I always feel like an outsider?

Albert Einstein was an outsider. None of those in power would hire him. Everyone feels sometimes an imposter. Greatest creativity comes from skepticism.

Correctly telling stories at the interview

At the interview, you can not only answer the interviewer's questions and nod approvingly at his statements. Nothing will tell you about your achievements, experience, ability to solve tasks and emerge victorious from difficult situations, like a good story from a professional life, or a few stories.

If you answer the interviewer's questions, citing working situations from the past as an example, this will show you as an experienced professional who has encountered problems and knows how to solve them not in theory but in practice.

Therefore, Work.ua recommends preparing a small library of such stories, so that in the right situation, just get the right story from the closet.

Any such story should consist of three parts:

A clear and understandable description of the problem.
A description of the ways in which the problem was resolved.
Description of the results and consequences.

What stories are worth preparing?
Carefully read the requirements for the candidate and future responsibilities

For each requirement in the job description, try to pick a story from experience that will confirm that you have the necessary skills. Write it down, the story should not be too long. And then rehearse. If you don’t have a suitable story, choose one where you have overcome similar difficulties. In this case, start with the words: “I didn’t encounter this specifically, but the situation was very similar.”
Common interview questions

Prepare a short story for the most common questions. For example, such:

What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Who do you see yourself in 5 years?
Why are you interested in this job?
    Why should we hire you?
    Tell us about yourself.

Get ready for a situational interview

During situational interviews, it is necessary to describe a model for resolving the situation, state your steps and the reasons for making certain decisions. If you answer such questions with stories from professional life, then this will be a big plus. Here are examples of some of the questions you might run into:

Give an example of an important goal that you succeeded / failed to achieve, and describe what was done for this.
What will you do if you get too much work?
You have a conflict with a colleague, how will you solve it?
Suppose you made a mistake, what will you do next?
What will you do if no one believes in your idea, but you are sure that you are right?

Interview Preparation

It’s a skill that can be developed to tell stories well and give the right examples. Train at home. You can in front of the mirror, you can ask a friend to listen to you. Do not think that you will succeed in keeping everything in mind. Take a pen and paper or use a computer to not forget anything. Also do not forget about body language, in which case it plays an important role.

What takes time in vain during a job search

If you are distracted by something in the process of completing a task, then it will take more time, and the result may not be at the highest level. Job search is also a task, with what is with the highest priority. Let's see what can lead us off course and what we can waste time in in such a difficult period.
What to look for first

What usually begins the search for a new job? With a resume. Many job seekers do not even begin to search until they have an ideal resume. And you can spend a lot of time on this, and it will constantly seem that it still needs to be improved. Already, time has been spent that will not return.

Post your resume as is, now. Modify it every day, but let it carry out its function at this time, let the work already look for you. Work.ua recommends that you regularly supplement your resume and always keep it up to date, it doesn’t matter if you need it for a specific period or not. Among other advantages, you will always have at your fingertips an up-to-date and complete resume, so that if necessary, you will not have to spend time on it.

Also often we are distracted and spend time doubting. “What if I'm not good enough now for such a job?” “Most likely this company will not be interested in me.” “Maybe you should try something else?” “What if management finds out that I want to change jobs?” - if you are looking for work, being employed. Such doubts are time-consuming, and can even make you abandon anything. Just act. At a minimum, you will receive answers to these questions.
Time eaters

Job search is a job in itself. And your home is your office. Those who have come across work at home know that this is not so simple. There are so many distractions around that a day may not go as it was intended. Discipline and discipline again! Clearly plan your day, make a daily plan to find work, learn to say no. If job search is really your main goal, then go to it as the main goal. Bring this to your loved ones. You do not have as much free time as it may seem.

Why work for free

From French “volunteer” is translated - volunteer. Anyone who consciously and selflessly works for the benefit of others can call himself a volunteer. Anyone who is willing to devote his time and skills to voluntary work in any area of public life, where necessary, can become a volunteer.
What for

But why do people voluntarily spend their time and effort without any financial gain? First of all, the most important motivation is the desire to help others, to make this world or someone’s specific life better. And combining business with pleasure is doubly good. As a volunteer, you can learn new things, improve your skills and gain very useful experience that you may not find in any paid work. It is also a great way to meet new people, visit new places and instill universal values into your own examples.

Volunteering does not have to take all your time. Often people cannot realize all their desires and needs, working only by profession. Voluntary work can bring diversity to life, allowing you to escape from everyday routine.
Volunteering and employment

Volunteers are not always - they are pure altruists. As we have already said, besides everything, this is a great way to gain new experience, skills, knowledge, useful connections. Volunteering is often the way to a successful career. Here you can always prove your best side, try yourself in various professional fields, decide on your life path.

In foreign companies, writing a resume on volunteering is a powerful argument in favor of the candidate. In Ukrainian companies, this practice is also gaining momentum. After all, if the candidate was engaged in volunteer activities, you can be sure of his active life position, positive human qualities, love of work. Such workers are always valuable. In addition, you can always count on recommendations from the coordinator, which will also be a good plus for employment.

For young people, volunteering can be a starting point in professional life. They will be able to gain experience interacting with other people, learn how to bear responsibility and will be able to determine their next steps.
Voluntary work in the world and Ukraine

The volunteer movement in many countries of the world is extremely popular. In a conscious society, there are always people for whom work for the benefit of others is a way of self-realization and self-improvement.

According to recent studies, in Europe 23% of the population is involved in volunteering, in the USA - 26%, in Australia 36% of the population are engaged in voluntary work. In Ukraine, so far only 10% of the population had experience of volunteering. The number is small, but every year the number of volunteers is growing.

Examples of well-known volunteer actions in Ukraine.

The Dnepropetrovsk animal welfare society “Fidelity” on a voluntary basis annually saves and finds a new home for more than 1000 homeless and abandoned animals.
Over the past year, the All-Ukrainian Volunteer Center "Search for Missing Children" helped find more than 350 children throughout Ukraine.
Volunteering does not necessarily imply a long or permanent period of employment. It can be one-day voluntary actions. For example, in 2013, the action “Let's Make Ukraine Clean!” Gathered more than 140 thousand volunteers who once went out to clean streets in 380 cities of Ukraine. And there are a lot of such examples.

Remember, each of us is capable of making life better. Everyone has such an opportunity. Who knows, maybe volunteering will be your entry ticket to work for the benefit of others and ourselves.
